Collection: 1793 Encyclopédie Méthodique
The Tableau Encyclopédique et Méthodique des trois Règnes de la Nature (1791–1823) was designed to be a comprehensive visual record of the natural world, organised by "kingdoms" (botany, zoology, and minerals). It was published as part of the Encyclopédie Méthodique, a massive reorganisation and expansion of the original French Encyclopédie.
The works are copperplate engravings, a labor-intensive process where an artist incises lines into a metal plate. The plates in this series were supervised by Robert Bénard, the director of engraving for the Encyclopédie, ensuring a high level of technical consistency across thousands of illustrations.
