A dramatic and detailed copperplate engraving of the Älvkarleby Falls in Sweden, a key plate from Erik Dahlbergh's monumental Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna.
Original title: Catharactæ Elekarlebyense. Erik Dahlbergh. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, c. 1700.
Dahlbergh's ambitious project aimed to document Sweden's cities, palaces and natural wonders, providing an invaluable visual record of the country during its 'Age of Greatness'. The falls on the Dalälven were one of the great spectacles of northern Europe, frequently included in eighteenth-century traveller accounts.
