A stately hand-coloured lithograph of the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Toul, a celebrated example of Lorraine's Flamboyant Gothic.
Original title: Cathédrale de Toul. Drawn by Renée; engraved by Dureau. Published by Couché Editeur, Paris, c. 1800.
The Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, built between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries, is renowned for its richly sculpted west front, one of the masterpieces of French Flamboyant Gothic. Prints such as this, issued by the Parisian publisher Jacques Couché around the turn of the nineteenth century, fed a growing antiquarian appetite for accurate records of provincial monuments at a moment when many were threatened by Revolutionary upheaval.
