A finely worked copperplate engraving of Diana's House, the elegant pavilion of the royal hunting park at Karlberg outside Stockholm.
Original Latin title: Delineatio amoenissima Domus Dianeburg in Regio Vivario Carlebergensi. Engraved by Johannes van den Aveelen. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1701.
Karlberg's deer park was a favoured retreat of the Swedish royal house, and the small Diana pavilion epitomised the Baroque blending of architecture, mythological allusion and formal landscape. Aveelen's record offers a rare glimpse of an aristocratic leisure landscape at the height of the Swedish Empire.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 30.0 × 40.0 cm. Very Good.
