A magnificent copperplate engraving of Drottningholm Palace, Sweden's principal royal residence, viewed from the south across Lake Mälaren.
Drawn and engraved by Erik Dahlbergh. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1693.
Begun in 1662 by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder for Queen Hedvig Eleonora, Drottningholm was the first major Swedish project conceived in the manner of Versailles and remains the residence of the Swedish royal family today. Dahlbergh's plate captures the palace and its gardens early in their evolution, before later 18th-century alterations softened the original Baroque rigour.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 34.0 × 45.0 cm. Very Good.
