An exquisite late 17th-century engraving of Salsta Palace in Uppland, viewed from the east across its formal Baroque parterre.
Titled SAALSTAD on the plate. Engraved by Willem Swidde. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, c. 1694.
Salsta, built for Count Nils Bielke, is one of the best-preserved late 17th-century country seats in Sweden and survives essentially as Swidde recorded it, complete with its axial garden plan. The plate forms part of a paired sequence of views in Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna, allowing the estate's geometry to be appreciated in three dimensions.
Copperplate engraving. Very Good.
