An exquisite late 17th-century engraving capturing the grandeur of Ekolsund Palace and its meticulously designed Baroque gardens.
Original title: Ekolsund. Engraved by Willem Swidde. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1699.
Ekolsund, in Uppland, was the country seat of Count Carl Gyllenstierna and one of the most ambitious French-style gardens of the Carolean era, with parterres, cascades and a formal canal extending towards Lake Mälaren. Swidde's plate captures the property at the height of its development, before its absorption into the royal estates under Gustav III.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 34.0 × 48.0 cm. Very Good.
