A magnificent late 17th-century veduta of Eriksberg Castle and its formal gardens, viewed from the south.
Original Latin title: Erichsberg meridiem versus. Engraved by Johannes van den Aveelen. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1693.
Eriksberg, in Södermanland, was one of the principal seats of the Sparre family and a showcase of late 17th-century Swedish landscape design. Aveelen's bird's-eye view captures the disciplined French-inspired parterres and tree-lined avenues that linked the manor to its surrounding agricultural landscape, an arrangement typical of the Suecia plates' celebration of aristocratic order.
Copperplate engraving. Very Good.
