Emil de Maes was a Belgian natural history artist whose detailed and lifelike illustrations contributed significantly to Czech ornithological publishing. His work for Kocourek's atlas exemplifies the fruitful collaboration between Belgian illustrators and Czech naturalists at the turn of the twentieth century.
