A panoramic copperplate engraving offering a detailed bird's-eye view of the historic Swedish coastal city of Gävle.
After Erik Dahlbergh; engraved by Johannes van den Aveelen. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1700.
Gävle was a leading port of the Bothnian Gulf and the principal Swedish city north of Uppsala, controlling much of the iron and timber trade with continental Europe. Dahlbergh's project recorded it shortly before the catastrophic 1776 fire reshaped its medieval street plan, lending Aveelen's engraving particular topographical value.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 30.0 × 40.0 cm. Good, with some age toning and minor handling wear.
