A female King Eider tends her ducklings in an intimate scene, showcasing the gentler side of ornithological illustration.
František Kouba. Plate 35. From Zoographia Infinita. Published in Prague, c. 1900.
František Kouba was a prominent Czech ornithological artist. His detailed and scientifically accurate illustrations contributed significantly to the rich tradition of natural history atlases in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This tender family scene is an unusual departure from the formal species portraits typical of the genre.
