Paintings of beautiful women — meiren hua — formed one of the most enduring genres in classical Chinese painting, often conveying themes of elegance, longing, and the idealised feminine within garden and palace settings. The Republic period saw a flourishing of the genre as artists adapted traditional gongbi techniques to express modern sensibilities while maintaining classical iconography and brushwork conventions.
