A striking early eighteenth-century copperplate engraving depicting the heraldic emblem of West Bothnia, featuring a majestic moose beneath a royal crown.
Original Latin title: Insigne Comitatus Botniæ Occidentalis. Engraved by Johannes van den Aveelen. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1701.
This print is an early example of Swedish heraldic art combined with naturalistic illustration, reflecting the Baroque-era fascination with regional fauna as emblems of provincial identity. Aveelen was the principal engraver of the later Suecia plates after the death of Willem Swidde.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 30.0 × 20.0 cm. Very Good.
