A detailed late 17th-century bird's-eye view of Nyköping, the historic Swedish royal town on the Baltic, captured with characteristic French precision.
Original Latin title: Nicopia qua orientem Spectat. Engraved by Adam Perelle. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Paris, c. 1680.
Nyköping, the medieval seat of Swedish dukes, hosted the infamous Nyköping Banquet of 1317 and was one of the residences of King Charles IX. The early Suecia plates were largely commissioned in Paris from the Perelle workshop, then Europe's pre-eminent specialists in topographical engraving, before production was relocated to Stockholm under Aveelen and Swidde.
Etching and engraving. Good.
