An impressive early 18th-century engraving of the palace of Royal Senator Fabian Wrede, set in the northern suburbs of Stockholm.
Original Latin title: Palatium Senatoris Regii FABIANI WREDE Holmiae in Suburbio Septentrionali. Drawn and engraved by Johannes van den Aveelen. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1703.
Fabian Wrede, President of the Treasury under Charles XI and XII, commissioned a townhouse-palace that combined Italianate Baroque massing with the modest scale of Swedish aristocratic dwellings. Aveelen's print provides one of the few surviving records of this lost building, since demolished as Stockholm expanded northward in the 19th century.
Copperplate engraving. Good.
