A handsome plate of pine species drawn by Henri Joseph Redouté, capturing the needle clusters, cones, and branching forms that distinguish the genus Pinus.
After Henri Joseph Redouté; engraved by Robert Bénard. Botanique, Plate 786, from the Encyclopédie Méthodique. Published in Paris, c. 1791.
The Encyclopédie Méthodique expanded upon Diderot and d'Alembert's original Encyclopédie, reorganising knowledge into subject-specific dictionaries with thousands of newly commissioned plates. Henri Joseph Redouté's conifer plates are among the finest in the series, combining scientific accuracy with an eye for the sculptural qualities of these evergreen trees.
Copperplate engraving on laid paper, approximately 29.7 × 21.6 cm. Very Good.
