An exquisite early 18th-century copperplate engraving of the inner courtyard of Tessin Palace, looking south, rich in classical architectural detail.
Original Latin title: Illustriss. D. Baronis N. Tessini Regiae Aulae Marescalli, Primarij Aedific: Ejusdem Palatij interior Prospectus meridiem versus. Engraved by Johannes van den Aveelen. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1702.
This view shows the south side of Tessin Palace's intimate courtyard, where Nicodemus Tessin the Younger orchestrated a sophisticated dialogue between Italianate facades and a parterre conceived as a miniature Roman villa garden. It documents the most refined Baroque interior in Stockholm at the height of Sweden's imperial age.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 35.0 × 28.0 cm. Very Good.
