A magnificent late 17th-century engraving of the Royal Stables on Helgeandsholmen in Stockholm, a flagship work of Charles XI's Baroque building programme.
Original Latin title: Equile Regium auspicio Regis CAROLI XI Holmiae in insula à Spiritu Sancto dicta. Anno 1696 affabre exstructum. Drawn by Erik Dahlbergh. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1696.
The Royal Stables were among Stockholm's grandest civic structures, completed in 1696 to designs in the orbit of Nicodemus Tessin the Younger. Dahlbergh's print captures the building at the peak of the Swedish Empire's golden age, alongside the bustling activity of horsemen and carriages on Helgeandsholmen.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 40.0 × 50.0 cm. Very Good, with minor age-toning consistent with age.
