A detailed copperplate engraving capturing the evocative ruins of Gudhem Monastery, a significant historical site in Sweden, as it appeared around 1700.
Original Latin title: Rudera Monasterij GUDHEMENSIS, prout nostro tempore vifsuntur. Engraved by Elias Beitz. From Erik Dahlbergh's Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, c. 1700.
This print is a testament to the ambitious topographical project of Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna, a monumental work documenting Sweden's historical and architectural heritage. Gudhem, a Cistercian nunnery founded in the twelfth century, was the burial place of Queen Catherine of Sweden, whose effigy survives among the ruins.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 30.0 × 20.0 cm. Very Good.
