A late 17th-century engraving of the romantic medieval ruins of Gröneborg Castle on Lake Vänern, set within a sweeping Swedish landscape.
Original Latin title: Rudera Arcis GRONEBORG. Drawn by Erik Dahlbergh. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, c. 1700.
Dahlbergh's monumental Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna was an ambitious project to glorify the Swedish Empire by documenting its cities, castles and landscapes. Gröneborg, a 14th-century stronghold abandoned by the 16th century, exemplifies the antiquarian spirit of the survey, recording vanished medieval power alongside contemporary Baroque grandeur.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 32.0 × 45.0 cm. Very Good, with strong impression and wide margins.
