A magnificent late 17th-century copperplate engraving capturing a panoramic view of Salsta Palace and its Baroque gardens in Uppland.
Original title: SAALSTAD. Engraved by Willem Swidde. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1694.
Salsta was built in the 1670s for Count Nils Bielke, a leading Swedish diplomat at the courts of Vienna and Versailles, who imported French taste wholesale into the Uppland countryside. Swidde's plate documents the formal gardens at their inception, before later softening into the looser landscape style of the 18th century.
Copperplate engraving. Good.
