An evocative early 18th-century engraving of the modest stone oratory at Finsta in Uppland, a key pilgrimage site associated with Saint Birgitta of Sweden.
Original Latin title: Oratorium divae BIRGITTAE in Finstad. Engraved by Johannes van den Aveelen. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1703.
Saint Birgitta (c. 1303–1373) was the most influential Swedish religious figure of the Middle Ages, founder of the Bridgettine order and patron saint of Europe. The small oratory at her family estate of Finsta survived the Reformation as a discreet memorial to her pre-Lutheran sanctity, recorded here at the height of Carolean antiquarian interest.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 35.0 × 25.0 cm. Very Good.
