A detailed copperplate engraving recording the medieval sepulchral monument of King Sverker II, set within an evocative Östergötland landscape.
Engraved by Johannes van den Aveelen. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1708.
Sverker II, killed at the Battle of Gestilren in 1210, was one of the contested kings of the early Christian Swedish realm and his memorial at Alvastra Abbey survived as a focus of dynastic memory long after the Reformation. Aveelen's plate exemplifies the Suecia project's ambition to weave medieval royal memory into the visual identity of the Carolean state.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 35.0 × 28.0 cm. Very Good, with light toning consistent with age.
