An exquisite late 17th-century copperplate engraving capturing the grandeur of Sjöö Palace and its formal Baroque approach.
Original Latin title: Delineatio magnifici pulcherrimi Palatii SJOO qua Orientem spectat. Engraved by Willem Swidde. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1690.
Sjöö, in Uppland, was rebuilt in the 1670s for Field Marshal Johan Gabriel Stenbock to designs by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, and is considered one of the earliest fully realised French-Italianate country houses in Sweden. Swidde's plate provides invaluable evidence of Tessin's original landscape conception, since softened by later replanting.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 40.0 × 50.0 cm. Very Good, with minor age-toning to margins.
