An impressive late seventeenth-century engraving of the magnificent Stegeborg Castle, a key stronghold in Swedish history, from a monumental topographical work.
Original title: Arx Stegborgh. Erik Dahlbergh. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, c. 1700.
Erik Dahlbergh's Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna was an ambitious project to document Sweden's cities, castles and landscapes, serving as a visual testament to the Swedish Empire's power and grandeur during its 'Age of Greatness'. Stegeborg, an island fortress in Östergötland, was a strategic royal castle from the medieval period until its slighting in the eighteenth century.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size not measured. Very Good.
