An early 18th-century engraving of Sturefors Castle in Östergötland, set among formal Baroque gardens beside Lake Erlången.
Original title: STUREFORS. Östergötland. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, c. 1715.
Built for Field Marshal Carl Piper, an intimate of Charles XII, Sturefors was designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and remains one of Sweden's best-preserved Baroque country seats. The Suecia plate captures the estate at its inception, with parterres and tree avenues laid out in the French manner that defined Tessin's architectural vision.
Copperplate engraving. Excellent.
