A magnificent copperplate engraving depicting the grand interior of Varnhem Abbey in Sweden, a testament to Baroque architectural splendour and historical preservation.
Drawn and engraved by Johannes van den Aveelen. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, c. 1700.
This print is a key plate from Erik Dahlbergh's monumental topographical work, which documented Sweden's historical sites and architecture during its 'Age of Greatness'. It captures the abbey after the significant renovations sponsored by Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, who was buried there in 1686.
Copperplate engraving on laid paper. Sheet size approximately 40.0 × 50.0 cm. Very Good condition.
