An evocative early 18th-century panoramic view of Västerås, capturing its medieval cathedral, royal castle and bustling Mälaren waterfront.
Engraved by Johannes van den Aveelen. From Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Published in Stockholm, 1702.
Västerås was one of Sweden's oldest cities and a regular royal residence, with a cathedral consecrated in 1271 and a castle that hosted the parliaments which proclaimed both the Vasa dynasty and the Lutheran Reformation. Aveelen's plate is among the most evocative city views in Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna, capturing the town at the height of the Carolean age.
Copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 30.0 × 45.0 cm. Good.
