Drawn and engraved by Johannes van den Aveelen. From Erik Dahlbergh's Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna, published in Stockholm, 1710. The upper view is titled ARX TAWASTEHVS decasum versus (Hämeenlinna Castle towards the west), and the lower view ARX TAWASTEHVS versus meridiem (Hämeenlinna Castle towards the south).
Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna was an ambitious topographical work commissioned by King Charles X Gustav of Sweden, aiming to glorify the Swedish Empire through detailed illustrations of its cities, castles, and monuments. It is a monumental work of Baroque cartography and architectural documentation.
