A monumental urn paired with an allegorical vignette of Naples, weaving Vesuvian smoke and antique attributes into a single decorative scheme.
Original title: Naples. Plate 35. Designed and engraved by Jean-Charles Delafosse. From Nouvelle Iconologie Historique ou Attributs Hieroglyphiques. Published in Paris by Jean-François Daumont, c. 1768–1773.
Delafosse's nation plates condensed each region into a portable iconography of attributes, costume, and landscape — here Naples is signalled by a smoking volcano and Mediterranean trophies. His vases became staple references for porcelain factories at Sèvres and Naples and for Parisian bronziers supplying the new Neoclassical interiors.
Hand-coloured copperplate engraving. Sheet approximately 46.6 × 33.8 cm. Very Good.
