A hand-coloured engraving by Jean-Charles Delafosse, arraying emblems of the arts, sciences, and navigation within richly ornamented neoclassical cartouches.
Drawn and engraved by Jean-Charles Delafosse. From Nouvelle Iconologie Historique ou Attributs Hiéroglyphiques, Plate 101. Published in Paris, c. 1771.
Delafosse was a pivotal figure in the goût grec, the early Neoclassical turn in French decorative art. His Iconologie supplied architects, silversmiths, and cabinet-makers with a vast vocabulary of allegorical trophies and hieroglyphic attributes, and its influence spread across Europe's ornamental repertoire well into the nineteenth century.
Hand-coloured copperplate engraving. Sheet size approximately 45.7 × 34.0 cm. Very Good.
