An evocative oil-pastel rendering of a late-night café interior, capturing the warm conviviality of figures gathered around lamplit tables in saturated colour.
France, circa 1930s.
Café scenes were a defining motif of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century French art, threading through the work of Manet, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec. In pastel the subject took on particular intimacy, the chalky medium lending itself to the soft glow of gaslight and the smoky atmosphere of the modern Parisian interior. Unsigned original works of this kind survive as direct, painterly records of bohemian sociability.
Oil pastel on paper. Sheet size approximately 64× 81cm. Good condition with light handling marks consistent with age.
