A sun-dappled oil-pastel landscape, capturing the lush tranquillity of a garden path opening through a wrought-iron gate in vivid colour.
France, circa 1930s.
The cultivated garden — bourgeois, walled, in flower — was a favoured subject of French painters working in the wake of Monet's Giverny and Bonnard's Le Cannet. Worked directly in pastel, the medium's grainy bloom captured the fall of summer light on foliage with a freshness rarely achieved in oil, while the gate motif gestured to the threshold between domestic order and the wider countryside.
Oil pastel on paper. Sheet size approximately 60 × 72 cm. Very Good condition.
