An evocative Art Deco wallpaper design of stylised cloud forms drifting across the sheet, rendered with a sophisticated atmospheric palette.
Original wallpaper design by Jacques Marcelin. Paris, c. 1925.
Marcelin worked within the flourishing community of French wallpaper designers active during the Art Deco period, producing studies and finished compositions for the Parisian papiers peints trade. The motif of stylised clouds — treated with subtle gradations of blue and grey — was a recurring subject in interwar interior design, evoking the modern airiness and Japoniste sensibilities popular in 1920s Paris.
Pen and ink with watercolour and gouache on paper, with a printed colour palette in the margin. Sheet size approximately 108 × 89 cm. Very Good.
