Four book-emblems on a single sheet — Hazard, Security, Glory and Salvation — staged with marine columns, anchors, and laurel wreaths.
Original title: Allegorie du Hazard, de la Sureté, de la Gloire et du Salut. Livre 9e, Plate 84. Drawn by Jean-Michel Moreau le Jeune; engraved by Robert Bénard. From Suite d'emblèmes pour les livres. Published in Paris, c. 1777.
Late eighteenth-century Parisian publishers commissioned suites of book-emblems for use as title-page vignettes, chapter heads, and tailpieces. Moreau le Jeune's elegant draughtsmanship and Bénard's exacting line gave the genre its definitive form, widely imitated through the Empire and Restoration.
Hand-coloured etching and engraving. Sheet approximately 46.6 × 33.8 cm. Excellent.
