An allegorical tomb-design uniting Athens and Macedonia, layered with antique trophies, tripods, and funerary urns.
Original title: Athenes et Macedoine. Plate 19. Designed and engraved by Jean-Charles Delafosse. From the series Tombeaux within Nouvelle Iconologie Historique ou Attributs Hieroglyphiques. Published in Paris by Jean-François Daumont, c. 1770.
The Tombeaux sequence translated Delafosse's antiquarian sources — Piranesi's Roman fantasies, Le Roy's Ruines de la Grèce — into ready-to-quarry templates for funerary monuments. They mark a key moment in the French rediscovery of Greek architecture, then beginning to displace Roman models in elite taste.
Hand-coloured copperplate engraving. Sheet approximately 46.7 × 33.9 cm. Very Good, with minor edge wear consistent with age.
