A pair of brilliantly hand-coloured eighteenth-century floral border bands, dense with blossoms in pink, blue, yellow and green against a cream ground.
Published by Remondini, Bassano del Grappa, c. 1780. From the workshop's carte fiorate series of decorative papers.
The Remondini firm dominated European decorative paper production throughout the eighteenth century, supplying engraved and hand-coloured sheets used for book endpapers, box linings, furniture facings and wall coverings across the Continent. Their floral border designs, often arranged in horizontal bands like this example, drew on the imported Indian chintz textiles then fashionable in Venetian and broader European markets.
Hand-coloured copperplate engraving. Sheet approximately 44.8 × 54.6 cm. Very Good.
