A vibrant late eighteenth-century decorative paper, densely strewn with stylised flowers in the manner of imported Indian chintz.
Published by Remondini, Bassano del Grappa, c. 1780. From the workshop's celebrated carte fiorate series.
The Remondini family of Bassano del Grappa ran one of Europe's largest popular print houses, exporting decorative papers across the continent from the mid-eighteenth century. Their carte fiorate — flowered papers — were used to line cabinets, bind books, and paper walls, satisfying a fashionable taste for the dense floral motifs of imported Indian chintz textiles.
Hand-coloured copperplate engraving. Sheet approximately 42.9 × 53.0 cm. Good.
