A richly coloured eighteenth-century floral pattern after the imported Indian chintz textiles then fashionable across Europe.
Published by Remondini, Bassano del Grappa, c. 1780. From the workshop's carte fiorate series.
Indian painted and printed cottons reached Italian markets through Venetian trade and shaped the visual repertoire of European decorative arts throughout the eighteenth century. The Remondini workshop translated these exotic motifs into engraved and hand-coloured papers, giving a wide market access to the dense, brilliantly hued floral patterns that defined contemporary taste in textiles and interiors.
Hand-coloured copperplate engraving. Sheet approximately 44.9 × 54.3 cm. Very Good.
