A vibrant oil-pastel depiction of a sun-drenched garden path bordered by flowering beds, leading to the gardener's cottage in midsummer.
France, circa 1930s.
The kitchen and cutting garden of the country house was a touchstone subject of French Post-Impressionist circles, taken up by Pierre Bonnard, Henri Lebasque and the wider Nabi orbit. Worked in pastel, the densely planted bed offered an ideal pretext for vibrating, near-abstract passages of colour, while the modest gardener's cottage anchored the composition in the rural, domestic scale that defined the genre.
Oil pastel on paper. Sheet size approximately 72 × 59 cm (portrait). Excellent condition.
